UNITS Discontinuing 4-xxxx Numbers, Adding 514 Prefix
New nationwide public safety standards for enhanced 911 services require the elimination of the university’s 004-xxxx (dialed 4-xxxx) telephone number prefix. To comply with these standards, UNITS is implementing two campus-wide changes.
First, all new telephone numbers requested by departments on or after March 31, 2005 , will be installed as Direct Inward Dial (DID) campus numbers (e.g., 292, 247, or 688) and incur the standard DID monthly fee of $2.00. No new 004 telephone numbers will be issued after this date.
Secondly, UNITS will change all existing telephone numbers beginning with the 004 prefix to a new university 514 prefix. The change to the 514 prefix will occur in phases over a 3-6 month period beginning April 1, 2005 . No action is required by administrative customers to implement the changes. Administrative customers will not see any fee changes in their monthly billing statements due to this latter change; however, the new 514 prefix will replace any 004 numbers listed on the statements.
Customers with telephone numbers changed to the 514 prefix should not notice a change in their telephone service. The last four digits of the telephone numbers will remain the same, and the 514 numbers will operate as the 004 numbers did. Off-campus callers will NOT be able to directly dial a 514-campus number; callers will hear a recorded message indicating the number dialed is not accessible from outside The Ohio State University. On-campus callers will still use 5-digit dialing (4-xxxx) to reach any 514-campus number.
UNITS will make every effort to ensure these changes have minimal impact to customers and the university community. Please contact a UNITS Account Manager if you have questions about these changes or other UNITS services.
